Term: Responsible AI
Responsible AI is an approach to developing and deploying artificial intelligence from both an ethical and legal point of view.
What is Responsible AI?
The advocates of responsible AI hope that a widely adopted governance framework of best AI practices will allow organizations around the world to ensure their AI programming is human-centered, interpretable, and explainable. Fairness, reliability, and transparency are ensured by having a responsible artificial intelligence system.
The Principles of Responsible AI
NIST released their AI Risk Management Framework, which follows many of the same principles as Microsoft and Google. The seven principles in NIST’s framework include:
- Validity and reliability. In order for AI systems to be considered responsible, they must be able to maintain their performance in unexpected circumstances without failing.
- Safety. Human life, property, and the environment should not be threatened by AI.
- Security and resilience. A responsible AI system should be secure and resilient against hostile attacks. An AI system should be able to prevent, protect against, and respond to attacks, as well as recover from them.
- Accountability and transparency. Transparency helps increase trust in the AI system and makes it easier to correct problems related to AI model outputs. As a result, developers can be held more accountable for the AI systems they develop.
- Explainability and interpretability. An AI system’s explainability and interpretability can provide a deeper understanding of its functionality and trustworthiness. For example, explainable AI provides users with explanations of why and how it arrived at its results.
- Privacy. Privacy aims to protect end users’ autonomy, identity, and dignity. The development and deployment of responsible AI systems must be based on values like confidentiality and control.
- Fairness with mitigation of harmful bias. In order to achieve fairness, AI bias and discrimination must be addressed. As values differ between organizations and cultures, this principle focuses on providing equality and equity.
